The Society's principal publications are the Journal and the Bibliography. The Journal,
published each December, is one of the UK’s leading periodicals in the field. Medieval
castles of the British Isles have always been one of the particular strengths of
the journal, but there are no geographical limits to its range, which continues to
expand. Selected pdf articles from the Journal issues of from two or more years ago
are freely available for consultation on-line here. All subscribing members receive
the journal as part of the membership package.
The 2010-11 issue is now available (January 10th). The cover image of the Gatehouse
at Bishop’s Castle, Wells, Somerset is taken from the Annual Proceedings section,
a 140+ page summary of the CSG’s Annual Conference in Taunton in 2010. Other articles
include a detailed account (Part II) of the history of machicolation, an overview
of the earliest doors and gates in British castles, and three articles on various
aspects of Licences to Crenellate. Journal articles for 2010-11 include:
- Lostwithiel’s Duchy Palace - Neil Guy
- Hadleigh Castle
- White Castle and the Dating of the Towers - Paul Remfry
- Machicolation - Some postscripts - John Harris
- Original castle Gates and Doors - Peter Burton
- The Defensibility of Irish Tower Houses - Duncan Berryman
